Feeding Bees In The Winter: Inspecting A Winter Bee Kind
Why Bees Die In The Winter

Varroa Mites Spreading Viruses
-Keep your mite levels down all year long to control winter viruses.

Lack of Resources
-Our Winter-Bee-Kind is a great way to ensure your bees do not run out of resources during winter.

Lack of Bees of Winter Physiology
-Bees of winter physiology live 4-6 months giving your bees the population they need to stay warm throughout the winter, and be strong in the spring.

Poor Queen/Lack of Adequate Population
-Inspect your hive every 2 weeks in the spring and summer to ensure you have a strong laying queen. If not, replace her.

Too Much Moisture
-Condensation can develop inside the hive in the winter. Use a Winter-Bee-Kind to absorb the moisture.

Disease
-Monitor your hive in the spring and summer for any signs of diseases.

Today is October 1st and cooler weather is being enjoyed throughout much of the US.

Also, something new I've added to my beekeeping videos is known as "Coffee Time", a time for us to just sit down and chat about life in general. It has been a big hit. Some people are watching my videos just for "Coffee Time".

Can You Feed Your Bees Too Much?
The simple answer is no. During spring and most of summer bees have an unlimited supply of nectar. More nectar is available to bees in spring and summer than what you can provide in a jar. However, bees are crazy about storing up everything they can get their hands on, so it is possible they can run out of room. This happens naturally in the spring without you feeding them and they sometimes swarm. Fortunately when we feed bees in the fall, their swarm instinct is gone. Our job is to feed our hives and give them room to grow and store!

New Video, 3 Tips To Help Prepare Your Bees For Winter

Hey everyone, we are David and Sheri Burns at Long Lane Honey Bee Farms, www.honeybeesonline.com

We are a week into fall already, can you believe it? We hope you are staying safe and healthy and enjoying the beautiful fall season.

Many beekeepers started beekeeping in 2020, some due to COVID, looking for a hobby to pass the time during quarantine. You've put some hard work into keeping your bees healthy all year so now it is time to put on the finishing touches to prepare them for a harsh winter.

Do Bees Hibernate In The Winter? No, they remain active all winter. However, the queen lays less eggs and the colony clusters together to stay warm as soon as the temps drop below 50 degrees (f).

Should You Wrap Your Hive For Winter? Yes, and No. Sometimes wrapping a hive with insulation can be helpful, but other times it can prevent the winter sun from warming the box.

Here are other questions I am often asked about getting bees through the winter?

How much should I reduce my entrance? Should I close up my screen bottom board or leave it open? How do I feed my bees in the winter? Should I leave one honey super on? Should I remove the queen excluder? How do I know if I have enough bees to make it through winter?

Over the last few months you may have made a few mistakes. But since bees thrive in the spring and summer your bees likely recovered and picked up the pace again. However, now that it is fall, there is no room for error. Mistakes now will have devastating results.

Feeding Bees In The Winter: Inspecting A Winter Bee Kind

We are David and Sheri Burns at Long Lane Honey Bee Farms, www.honeybeesonline.com

Believe it or not summer ends in 27 days. Are your bees ready for winter?

You've spent money, worried about your bees and have worked hard to establish you bees. Most beekeepers take a hands off approach to their bees in the fall, believing that everything is fine. This type of approach accounts for more than 50% of why entire hives perish in the winter.

Winter preparation starts NOW! So many studies reveal how poor nutrition is a leading cause of CCD and why bees are perishing, especially in winter.

Dos & Don'ts Of Feeding Bees

1. Do not use an entrance feeder in the fall. It can invite robber bees.

2. Only use a top feeder.

3. Do not feed sugar water alone.

4. Add protein, amino B, and Honey B Healthy to all of your fall liquid feeding.

5. Do not trust the amount of honey stored in your hives. Your hive can consume it before winter arrives. Feed!

6. Feed 1:1 liquid in late summer through fall with additives to stimulate brood rearing of bees with winter physiology that live 4-6 months through the winter.

7. Stop feeding liquid when daytime highs are 50 degrees (f) or below.

8. Feed your bees Winter-Bee-Kind winter food when temperatures drop below 50 degrees.
